Welcome!
The Tibetan word jhamtse means "love and compassion" and is the cornerstone of the work of Jhamtse International.
August 2010
August 29th brought a celebration of Independence Day in Lumla with great photos of the festivities. You can see the school schedule (long day!) by checking out the Jhamste Gatsal blog. There are also many recent updates from Jhamtse Youth travelers Sandy & Ross, and volunteers Suzzane, Hannah, and Sarah. Read "like you're there" news about exams, celebrating the 4th anniversary of the school, visiting Lobsang's mother, and...Monpa pants! Leave a comment -- how wonderful it is that we can share thoughts with each other so easily across half a planet.

You can also check out progress on the bathhouse building. More photos.

What is Jhamtse International?
Ten years ago, Venerable Lobsang Phuntsok, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, came to the US and started Jhamtse Buddhist Center, five communities in Massachusetts studying and practicing the Mahayana Buddhist tradition of love, compassion, and wisdom. On this foundation, Jhamtse Gatsal, a school in remote northeast India, gives desperately poor
children a chance to thrive and learn for the first time. Finally, Jhamtse Clubs inspire young people to explore the power of love, compassion, and wisdom in the world.
